US President Donald Trump declared Friday that a mysterious attack on two oil tankers in the Gulf of Oman had Iran "written all over it," rejecting Tehran's denial that it had any involvement. As US-Iranian tensions soared, Trump dismissed previous threats by Tehran that in case of conflict it could block the Hormuz Strait a narrow seaway vital to the world's oil supplies.

The perilous contest between US and Iran for influence in the Middle East escalated dramatically on Thursday as two-tankers were targeted in suspected attacks near the strategic Strait of Hormuz, vital waterway for global oil shipments. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo blamed Iran for "blatant assault" on the vessels and said US would defend itself and its allies against Iranian aggression in the region.
