
Companies ask I-T Department to soften benami law: Report

Companies have asked the Income Tax Department to soften the benami law that was activated in 2016 to curb the menace of black money and prohibit the holding of properties and assets in someone else's name to escape tax, according to a report. Tax authorities are said to have received pleas from various trade bodies requesting them to amend the law.

The Madras HC has ordered the Income Tax department to furnish details of the assets and liabilities of former TN CM J Jayalalithaa. The order was on a petition filed by K Pugazhendi, a lawyer for Amma Peravai. Justices N Kirubakaran and Abdul Quddhose heard the petition in which they raised question as to the details of the location and valuation of Jayalalithaa's property.

Applying for new PAN card? Father's name not mandatory

The income tax department said quoting of father's name in PAN application forms will not be mandatory in cases where mother of the applicant is a single parent. Currently, furnishing father's name is mandatory for the allotment of Permanent Account Number (PAN). The new rules would come into effect from December 5.
