Coast Guard Gets Power To Seize Ships In India's Exclusive Economic Zone

The Indian Coast Guard has been given powers under the Coast Guard Act to board, search any vessel and arrest people for offences within the maritime zone of the country, Defence Secretary Ajay Kumar said on Thursday. A Coast Guard official said earlier the maritime security agency did not have the power to board any vessel passing through India's Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ).

Defense Minister Rajnath Singh on Wednesday formally commissioned the Coast Guard offshore patrol vessel 'Varaha' at the Chennai Port Trust in Chennai. After unveiling a plaque commemorating the commissioning ceremony, Rajnath Singh said the state-of-the-art ship was going to be a force multiplier for Indian Coast Guard, pointing it has capabilities to operate twin-engine ALH Helicopters developed indigenously by HAL.
Coast Guard May Join Hands With Paramilitary Forces In Future: Official

Indian Coast Guard, which recently joined hands with the Assam Rifles to utilise each other's assets for operational training, might have such tie-ups with other paramilitary forces, a top Coast Guard official said today. Director Generals of the Indian Coast Guard and the Assam Rifles Rajendra Singh and Lt Gen Sukhdeep Sangwan respectively had inked the pact at a ceremony in Shillong.
