Indian warships escorting merchant vessels in the Persian Gulf will remain deployed for the longer term, officials with direct knowledge of the matter said, as tensions between Iran and Western powers rise. Trump has been putting pressure on European and Asian allies to shoulder security responsibilities and not depend on the United States alone. India is the biggest buyer of Iranian oil after China.

Team Modi Seeks Bids For 6 New Submarines. $6.6 Billion At Stake

Prime Minister Narendra Modi's administration has asked global warship makers to submit proposals to build six conventional submarines in India to boost local shipyard capability and plug gaps in the navy's underwater warfare fleet. The request for expression of interest to the foreign companies were issued earlier this month, they said, but the award of contract could take at least three years.
