Telecom regulator may suggest new spectrum bands for 5G services

The Trai could come out with the pricing and quantum of newer spectrum bands including mmWave range for fifth-generation or 5G wireless technology rollout if the government seeks its view, a top official told ETT. The Modi-led government has already established a-high-level 5G Forum under the Indo-American engineer and Stanford University professor AJ Paulraj which has already recommended newer bands to aid 5G rollout.
Data protection: DoT may be stricter than Srikrishna panel

With telecom operators being the largest handlers of data, including sensitive personal information, telecom secretary Aruna Sundararajan has said that security and protection here is paramount and hence operators may have stricter data protection regulations compared to those recommended by the BN Srikrishna panel. She, however, stressed that the sector already has clear provisions that data must be stored only in India.
India seeks ways to block Facebook, WhatsApp in case of misuse

India has asked its telecom operators to find ways of blocking applications such as Facebook and messaging app WhatsApp in the case of misuse, according to a document seen by Reuters. India has in recent months intensified efforts to crack down on mass message forwards after it found that people were using social media and messaging apps to spread rumours and stoke public anger.
