INX Media case: ED team reaches Tihar Jail to question P Chidambaram

A team of ED officials on Wednesday reached the Tihar Jail to question former Union finance minister P Chidambaram in the INX Media money laundering case, officials said. They said the Enforcement Directorate (ED) investigating team is following the procedure after a local court on Tuesday allowed the central agency to interrogate the senior Congress leader in this case.

Former-finance-minister P Chidambaram sought bail from the Supreme Court in the INX Media case filed by the Central Bureau of Investigation, claiming the agency wanted to humiliate him by keeping him in custody for so long. Questioning the CBI's contention, Mr Singhvi said in September, the CBI claimed in Delhi High Court that Mr Chidambaram has approached two co-accused and tried to influence them.

Former-Union-Minister P Chidambaram will be arrested by the ED after a special-court in Delhi agreed to the agency's request for the custodial interrogation of the 74-year-old who has been in Tihar jail since September 5 in the INX-Media-case. The agency, which accuses him of money laundering in the same case, had moved two applications yesterday to formally arrest Mr Chidambaram and seek his custody.
