A Canadian, believed to be a former diplomat, has been detained in China, prompting concern in Ottawa and Washington, as Beijing fumes over arrest of a senior technology executive. "We are aware of the situation of a Canadian detained in China. We have been in direct contact with the Chinese," PM Justin Trudeau told reporters, adding that Ottawa was taking his arrest "very seriously."

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said Thursday that politics played no part in the arrest of a top executive of Chinese tech giant Huawei, who was detained on a US extradition request. "I can assure everyone that we are a country (with) an independent judiciary," Trudeau told a tech conference in Montreal. "And they took this decision without any political involvement or interference."
