Former Maldives Vice President Ahmed Adeeb Taken To Detention Center

A former vice president of the Maldives, who was arrested after fleeing to India to avoid questioning over the alleged embezzlement of state funds, has been taken to a Maldives detention center after being returned to the country. India had refused entry to former Vice President Ahmed Adeeb on Thursday. Maldives police later confirmed that they had arrested him.

Maldives police on Saturday said they had arrested former vice-president Ahmed Adeeb and were bringing him to the capital Male after he was refused entry to India. Adeeb, who was sentenced to 15 years in jail in 2016 for allegedly plotting to assassinate the Maldives' then-president Abdulla Yameen, was detained early on Thursday in the city of Thoothukudi after arriving illegally by tugboat.
