Ex-Maldives President Abdulla Yameen Charged With Money Laundering

Maldives' former president Abdulla Yameen, who is accused of using money stolen from state coffers, was charged with money laundering, according to local media report. The case stems from an alleged deal to lease islands for tourist resort development and the discovery of USD 1 million in his bank account. The case has been filed at the criminal court, the Prosecutor General's office tweeted.

Maldives' top court cancels jail sentence of former president

The Maldives' SC canceled a 13-year-old jail sentence imposed on former president Mohamed Nasheed for a terrorism conviction, saying prosecutors had provided no-evidence to prove his guilt. Nasheed, the country's first democratically elected leader, was wrongfully charged and the criminal court should not have proceeded to trial, the court said. Yameen lost power in the September presidential election to Nasheed's ally Ibrahim Mohamed Solih.

PM Modi to attend swearing-in of Maldives president-elect on Nov 17

PM Modi will attend the swearing-in ceremony of Maldivian president-elect Ibrahim Mohamed Solih next week, MEA announced Friday. The PM will also visit Singapore to-take-part in 13th East Asia Summit and other meetings on November-14 and 15, MEA Spokesperson Raveesh Kumar said at-a-media briefing. The PM has accepted the invitation extended by Maldives' president-elect Solih to attend his swearing-in ceremony on November-17, he said.
