Monsoons to be well distributed in India: IMD

With indications of a milder El Nio and a positive Indian Ocean Dipole, rainfall during the summer monsoon this year is likely to be well-distributed across the country and yield India's third consecutive good harvest of kharif crops, the Met office clarified as one of its forecast models still shows the probability of below-normal rains in June.

Bad Weather Kills 38 in Four States

Bad weather has taken 38 lives in four states. Nine people in Gujarat, seven in Maharashtra, six in Rajasthan and 16 people have lost their lives in Madhya Pradesh, said reports on Wednesday. Rain and storms that lashed Rajasthan killed six people. The Prime Minister has also approved Rs.50,000 each for those injured due to unseasonal rain and storms in parts of Gujarat.

Monsoon likely to be near normal this year, says Met department

India is likely to receive average monsoon rains this year, the India Meteorological Department said on Monday, raising expectations of higher farm and economic growth in Asia's third-biggest economy, where half of the farmland lacks irrigation. Monsoon rains are expected to be 96 percent of a long-term average, M Rajeevan, secretary at the Ministry of Earth Sciences, told a news conference.
