MJ Akbar, Others Defend Government On CAA After UN Rights Body Critique

Amid growing international scrutiny over the controversial Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) and allegations of Muslims being persecuted in India, parliamentarians from India and Europe held discussions on the subject on the sidelines of the ongoing 43rd session of the United Nations Human Rights Council in Geneva. India has been facing growing criticism worldwide since the CAA was passed by parliament in December 2019.

Former-Union-Minister M J Akbar told a Delhi court that journalist Priya Ramani's accusations of sexual misconduct against him in the wake of the #MeToo movement in 2018 were "figment of her imagination" and caused him "great humiliation" and "irreparably damaged his reputation". Senior-advocate Geeta Luthra, appearing for Mr Akbar, said that the complaints should have been raised then and there before the appropriate authority.

Journalist Priya Ramani told a Delhi court that she had no "mala fide" and "extraneous" motive for making the allegations of sexual harassment against former-Union-minister MJ Akbar. Ms Ramani made the submissions before Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Vishal Pahuja while being cross examined by MJ Akbar's counsel in a criminal defamation complaint. She said her tweets accusing MJ Akbar were not "defamatory and malicious".
