Britannia Industries seeks legal advice on Ness Wadia's role

Wadia group company Britannia Industries has sought external legal opinion over the continuation of Ness Wadia as director at the insistence of independent members of the board, following his conviction in Japan for possession of cannabis. The board has tapped retired Supreme Court chief justice TS Thakur for the opinion, said people with knowledge of the matter.

Ness Wadia, son of industrialist Nusli Wadia and inheritor of one of India's wealthiest business families, has been sentenced for drugs possession while on skiing holiday to Japan. Financial Times has reported that Ness Wadia, heir to 283-year-old Wadia Group and co-owner of Kings XI Punjab cricket team, was arrested in early March at New Chitose Airport in the northern Japanese island of Hokkaido.
