New Zealand PM Jacinda Ardern ordered an independent judicial inquiry into the Christchurch mosque attacks, asking whether police and intelligence services could have prevented the March-15 attack. Ardern said a royal commission the most powerful judicial probe available under New Zealand law was needed to find out how a single gunman was able to kill 50 people in an attack that shocked the world.

Police are investigating a fire at a Southern California mosque on Sunday as a possible arson and hate crime after fresh graffiti on the driveway mentioned the mass shootings at two mosques in New Zealand, local media reported. Police and firefighters were called to the Islamic Center of Escondido, north of San Diego, about 3:15 a.m.

The owner of a New Zealand gun store said on Monday the man charged with murder in Christchurch's mass shooting had bought firearms and ammunition online from the store, but it did not sell him the high-powered weapon used in the mosque shootings. Australian Brenton Tarrant, 28, a suspected white supremacist, was charged with murder on Saturday.
