Increase in power demand must translate into more PPAs: RK Singh

The government is banking on upcoming electricity-tariff-policy to ensure that more long-term PPAs are signed by electricity discoms. Signalling relief to stressed and stranded electricity generation plants, Union power minister RK Singh, during an interview with Anupam Chatterjee, said his ministry is coming-up with second version of UDAY policy to address certain core issues such as billing-collection inefficiencies and pilferage that cripple the sector.
Debt Recovery: Banks mull Guj genco offer to take over GVK Gautami

Bankers are currently mulling an offer from a Gujarat government-owned genco to take over the 469-mw gas-based GVK Gautami Power, senior bankers aware of the developments told FE. The bankers said the genco's offer includes a payment of 50% of outstanding amount. At the end of March, 2016, the outstanding loans were Rs 1,188.90 crore, according to Capitaline.
World's oldest known plant virus discovered

Scientists have discovered the world's oldest plant virus dating back 1,000 years after analysing ancient corncobs found at a Native American archeological site. Only a few RNA viruses had been discovered previously from archaeological samples, the oldest dating from about 750 years ago. The Ancestral Puebloans who lived in the canyon planted crops such as maize, beans and squash.
