
NGOs Get One-Time Exemption To Apply For Foreign Funding Registration

The government on Thursday gave a one-time exemption to NGOs, whose Foreign Contribution (Regulation) Act registrations were cancelled for not filing annual returns, to apply for registration within three months, a move which may benefit hundreds of organisations. It has been further decided that for uploading missing annual returns on the FCRA Portal, no penalty will be imposed, according to a Home Ministry order.

Assam man lynched by NGO members in Meghalaya, three arrested

A 45-year-old man from Assam was allegedly lynched by 3 members of a non-governmental organization (NGO) in Meghalaya's East Garo Hills district. The victim, who had come to supply bakery items along with his brother-in-law, was assaulted on the pretext of examining his trade license. Police immediately arrested three accused while one who had managed to escape, surrendered later.

Following a crackdown on NGOs over alleged violations of norms related to foreign funding, the Centre has written to state governments and union territories to monitor the activities of such organisations that indulge in anti-national activities.
