Nirbhaya Convict Vinay Sharma's Plea Against Mercy Petition Dismissed

The SC dismissed a petition against the rejection of the mercy-petition filed by Vinay Sharma, one of convicts in the 2012 Delhi-gang-rape-case. The death row-convict had claimed in the SC that President Ram Nath Kovind had not considered the "mental-stability" he suffered due to torture in jail while rejecting his mercy-petition. The centre denied the assertion, saying he was "fit and of sound mind".

President Ram Nath Kovind has rejected the mercy petition of Akshay Thakur, the third of the four convicts in Nirbhaya gangrape case. The death row prisoner had filed the appeal on Saturday, hours after President Kovind turned down the appeal of fellow convict Vinay Sharma. A mercy plea to the President of India is the last option for a prisoner awarded the death penalty.
No hanging tomorrow: Delhi court stays execution of Nirbhaya case convicts

A Delhi-court approved the plea filed by death row convicts in the Nirbhaya case convicts, seeking a stay on their execution on February-1. The executions have been postponed till further orders. The verdict was delivered by Additional Sessions Judge Dharmender Rana at Delhi's Patiala-court. Convicts have the option of moving a mercy-petition before the president only after the apex court dismisses their curative plea.
