Nobel winner Abhijit Banerjee is "totally Left-leaning" and his theories have been rejected by the people of India, Union Minister Piyush Goyal said on Friday, just a beat after congratulating the renowned economist. Abhijit Banerjee, named for the prestigious award along with Esther Duflo and Michael Kremer, has been a strong and vocal critic of the BJP-led government's economic policies.

Three economists were awarded the Nobel Prize in economics for their "experimental approach" to solving global poverty. The winners are Abhijit Banerjee, an economist at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology; economist Esther Duflo, also at MIT; and Michael Kremer, an economist at Harvard University. Duflo, 46, is only the second woman and the youngest person ever to be awarded the prize in economic sciences.

The 2019 Sveriges Riksbank Prize in Economic Sciences in Memory of Alfred Nobel has been awarded to Kolkata-born American economist Abhijit Banerjee, his wife Esther Duflo and American development economist Michael Kremer. The trio won the award "for their experimental approach to alleviating global poverty." Esther had completed her PhD in Economics in 1999, under supervision of Abhijit.
