NRIs are India's brand ambassadors: PM Modi

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday described NRIs as India's brand ambassadors and said they were the symbols of the country's capabilities. The prime minister was inaugurating the 15th Pravasi Bharatiya Diwas convention in his parliamentary constituency of Varanasi. "People of Indian origin are in leadership roles in countries such as Mauritius, Portugal and Ireland," he said.

The PBD to be held in Varanasi between January 21 and 23 will cap NDA government's outreach to the overseas Indian community and be the last major diplomatic exercise before the next general election. The chief guest is PM Pravind Jugnauth of Mauritius the first-person to be accorded this honour who has his roots in Indian state in which the PBD is being organised.

In a relief to foreign investors worried over new know your customer (KYC) and beneficiary ownership norms, the Securities and Exchange Board of India (Sebi) on Saturday initiated a public consultation process for finalising the new guidelines, after a high-powered panel suggested changes on several contentious proposals and more time for compliance.
