Onion at eye-watering Rs 150/kg; imports underway

Retail onion prices on Friday remained higher at up to Rs.150/kg even as the imported supplies have started arriving to boost the domestic availability and check prices. In metros, the retail-price of onion was ruling at Rs.120 /kg in Kolkata, at Rs.102/kg in Delhi and Mumbai and at Rs.80/kg in Chennai, as per the data maintained by the consumer affairs ministry.

After onion and garlic, prices of edible oil have registered a sharp rise due to costlier imports. Consumers will have to dig deeper into their pockets as the cooking oil prices may rise further, say oil industry experts. Palm oil prices have shot up by Rs 20 a litre (more than 35 percent) in the last two months.

India's rampant onion prices may finally be running out of steam, with fresh supplies of the pungent vegetable set to hit the market next month. Prices at one of India's biggest wholesale markets may plunge to about 20-25 rupees per kilogram from mid-January, according to the source. That's more than 80% below Tuesday's record price.
