Maharashtra extends compensation deadline to December 31 for onion farmers

Maharashtra government today extended the scope of the compensation that will be given to onion farmers. Earlier, the state government had announced compensation of Rs.200/quintal for up to maximum 200 quintal per farmer for those farmers who had sold their onion between November 1-December 15, 2018. Now, farmers who sold onions from December 15-December 31 will also be eligible to get compensation.

Onion prices crash to Re 1 per kilo in wholesale market

Wholesale onion prices have dropped to Re 1 per kilo at the country's largest wholesale market at Lasalgaon APMC in Maharashtra. The prices have crashed nearly 91 per cent in the past couple of months from Rs 21.51 per kg on October 17 to Rs.1/kg on December 24. The prices have crashed due to sudden rise in supply of summer onions in the market.

Onion Prices On The Rise In Delhi Due To Tight Supplies

Wholesale onion prices in Delhi have shot-up to Rs.23/kg in last ten-days on tight supplies from producing states, a traders body said. A similar increase was seen in retail-markets, where the kitchen staple was quoted in range of Rs.30-40/kg depending on the quality and locality. The prices were ruling at Rs.15/kg in year-ago period at Lasalgoan market, the official data showed.
