India lifted 271 million people out of poverty between 2006 and 2016, recording the fastest reductions in the multidimensional poverty index values during the period with strong improvements in areas such as "assets, cooking fuel, sanitation and nutrition," a report by the United Nations said. The 2019 global MPI from the UN Development Programme(UNDP), the Oxford Poverty and Human Development Initiative(OPHI) was released Thursday.

Accusing the Congress of always using poverty as a major-political-weapon, PM Modi said the best remedy to eradicate-poverty is to do away with that party. "The Congress has all along been reaping political benefits by employing-poverty as-a-major-weapon. Poverty cannot be eradicated as-long-as the Congress exists," Modi said addressing the BJP's election rally in Sonepur which falls under Balangir Lok Sabha constituency in west Odisha.
