Nirbhaya Case: Akshay Thakur's Plea Against Hanging Rejected By President

President Ram Nath Kovind has rejected the mercy petition of Akshay Thakur, the third of the four convicts in Nirbhaya gangrape case. The death row prisoner had filed the appeal on Saturday, hours after President Kovind turned down the appeal of fellow convict Vinay Sharma. A mercy plea to the President of India is the last option for a prisoner awarded the death penalty.

Amid nationwide outrage over multiple cases of rape and murder, President Ram Nath Kovind has said there should be no provision of mercy pleas for child rapists. "Rape convicts under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act should not be allowed mercy petition," President Ram Nath Kovind said at an event in Rajasthan on Friday.
