South Africa President Cyril Ramaphosa to be Republic Day chief guest

South-African President Cyril Ramaphosa will be the chief-guest at the Republic Day event next-year, sources have told The Indian Express. Ramaphosa, who became South Africa's President in February this year, has accepted the invitation. His acceptance comes after fiasco over US President Trump declining the Indian government's invitation to be chief-guest. Modi had met Ramaphosa on sidelines of BRICS summit in June this year.

US president Donald Trump has turned down Indias invitation to be the chief guest at the 70th Republic Day celebrations in January, news reports said Sunday. Officially though, neither the Indian foreign ministry nor the US embassy have said anything on the matter. When asked, the US embassy in Delhi said only the White House could comment on the president's travel plans.
