Robotic system can help paralysed patients regain hand movement

Scientists have developed a-system that can read brain signals to help users control an-artificial hand just by thinking an advance that could help stroke patients regain the ability to move their fingers. Spinal injuries or stroke often leaves a-person-partially paralysed. Such disabilities leave them disconnected from their families and community. The team is now trying to improve the technology to build a complete exoskeleton.

Scientists sew with just sound waves

Scientists have successfully used sound waves to levitate and manipulate multiple objects simultaneously for the first time, using the system to "sew" a thread into a piece of fabric. Sound exerts a small acoustic force and by turning up the volume of ultrasonic waves, too high pitched for humans to hear, scientists create a sound field strong enough to move small objects.

Kilogram set to be redefined, heralding a new era of measurement

Scientists on Friday unanimously voted to redefine kilogram, retiring the platinum alloy cylinder conceived in Paris in 1889. Redefined by the Planck constant, the new system determines the unit of mass through the electrical force needed to counteract the weight of a kilogram on a Kibble balance. The changes will come into effect from May 20, 2019, World Metrology Day.
