Kilogram set to be redefined, heralding a new era of measurement

Scientists on Friday unanimously voted to redefine kilogram, retiring the platinum alloy cylinder conceived in Paris in 1889. Redefined by the Planck constant, the new system determines the unit of mass through the electrical force needed to counteract the weight of a kilogram on a Kibble balance. The changes will come into effect from May 20, 2019, World Metrology Day.

Scientists have identified a fungal compound that could lead to a new antibiotic, giving mankind another weapon to fight against superbugs. Due to the overuse of antibiotics in recent years, strains of bacteria have developed resistance to many different types of drugs. Researchers from Chongqing University have developed a technique to synthesise albomycins, a group of fungal compounds that have previously shown antimicrobial properties.

Wrinkled skin and hair loss are hallmarks of ageing. However, scientists reversed aging-associated skin wrinkles and hair loss in a mouse model. In a mouse model developed at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, Keshav Singh, Ph.D., and colleagues found when a change leading to mitochondrial dysfunction is induced; the mouse develops wrinkled skin and extensive, visible hair loss in a matter of weeks.
