Chinmayanand, Accused Of Rape, To Stay In Jail Till October 16

A local court in Shahjahanpur on Thursday extended the judicial custody of former Union Minister Chinmayanand till October-16. A law student has levelled rape charges against the BJP leader. His counsel Om Singh said the BJP leader was produced in the court through videoconferencing from the jail because of security reasons and Chief Judicial Magistrate Omvir Singh extended his judicial custody by 14 days.

Former-union-minister Chinmayanand, arrested in a case of alleged rape last Friday, may not leave a hospital in Lucknow anytime soon, indicates a medical-bulletin put-out by doctors. Chinmayanand, 72, was arrested last Friday on charges that he misused his authority and induced a 23-year-old law-student in Shajahanpur-town to have sex with him. The young-woman has accused him of rape and blackmail for over a year.

A SIT asked by the SC to probe accusations of rape and blackmail against BJP-leader and former union minister Chinmayanand on Wednesday said it will not be swayed by questions raised in the media or accusations of trying to shield the influential Uttar Pradesh politician. The 23-year-old from Shahjahanpur, Uttar Pradesh, threatened to set herself on fire if the BJP-leader is not arrested immediately.
