Government plans social media checks 48 hours before voting

The government is working on a strategy to enforce campaign silence on social media 48-hours before polls, as suggested by a parliamentary panel, government officials familiar with the matter said. The embargo, already followed by print and TV media, will likely be implemented on social networks during the summer's LS-elections. "Besides, their servers are located overseas, beyond the legal jurisdiction of India," official added.

Facebook Inc said it has removed a number of pages and accounts that engaged in "coordinated inauthentic behavior" targeting people in Moldova, where elections will be held later this month. The owners of pages and accounts typically posted about local news and political issues such as required Russian or English language education and reunification with Romania, Facebook said in a blog post.
