US, Taliban To Hold More Talks On Ending War

The US and the Taliban will open fresh negotiations next-week, the US negotiator said Saturday, as he voiced hope for progress in ending America's longest-war. Zalmay Khalilzad, the US special representative on Afghanistan, said two-sides would start their seventh round of talks on June-29. "Based on my recent visits to Afghanistan and Qatar, I believe all sides want rapid progress," Khalilzad wrote on Twitter.

Pakistan has taken some steps against terror groups post the Pulwama attack but they are still reversible, a top US official said on Wednesday, urging the Pakistani leadership to take sustained, irreversible, and permanent actions against terrorists operating in the country and areas under its occupation. Ms Wells said that US relationship with Pakistan remains one of its most complex and most consequential.

The Taliban are unlikely to call a ceasefire any time soon, the group's leader indicated on Saturday, though he said the "doors of dialogue" with the US remain open. The rare message from Haibatullah Akhundzada comes after a sixth round of US-led talks ended last month in Qatar with little sign of progress and amid continued bloodshed across Afghanistan.
