Sterlite Copper appoints Pankaj Kumar as new CEO

Vedanta Ltd named metals industry veteran Pankaj Kumar as Sterlite Copper chief executive, amid struggles to reopen its smelter in southern India that was shut after police killed 13 demonstrators protesting against the plant. Kumar replaces P Ramnath, who led Sterlite for eight years. Under Ramnath, the smelter was ordered shut at least twice, including for an alleged gas leak in 2013.

Security tightened for Sterlite plant amid reports of fresh protest

Security has been tightened around Sterlite Copper plant here following information that attempts were on by some outfits to organise a-major-protest in backdrop of NGT setting aside a Tamil Nadu government order permanently closing it,officials said. Thirteen people were killed in police firing on May 22-23 after the 99-day long protest by locals against Sterlite turned violent and government properties came under attack.
