Stricter Penalty For Traffic Violation In Centre's Motor Vehicles Bill

A bill aimed at weeding out corruption, improving road safety and promote the use of more technology to regulate traffic was passed in the LS with by voice vote. Speaking on The Motor Vehicles Bill, 2019, which was moved in the House for passage on Monday, Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari said "the Bill is not mandatory for states to join".

The Motor Vehicles (Amendment) Bill pending nod in the Rajya Sabha could bring about a 20% decline in road accidents from the current 5 lakh a year, opines Road Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari. Currently, India stands with the highest number of road accidents in the world at 5 lakh road accidents a year, out of which about 1.5 lakh people die.
