Foreign Minister S Jaishankar expressed confidence that India would become a permanent member of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC). "But I'm realistic enough to know that it's a long and patient effort. We're not lacking in patience...perseverance and...in our aspirations," he said. Currently, there are five permanent UNSC members China, France, Russia, the UK, and the US.

Russia and China have asked United Nations Security Council to meet on Thursday over "statements by US-officials on their plans to develop and deploy medium-range missiles," according to request seen by Reuters. Moscow and Beijing want to convene the 15-member council under the agenda item "threats to international peace and security" and have requested that UN disarmament affairs chief Izumi Nakamitsu brief the body.
