Delhi High Court dismisses plea seeking voting rights for prisoners

The Delhi HC has dismissed a PIL seeking voting rights for prisoners, saying the facility was provided under the law and it can be taken away by law. A bench of Chief-Justice D N Patel and Justice C Hari Shankar said the SC has held that the right to cast vote was neither a-fundamental-right nor a common-law-right and was only provided by a statute.

Court Seeks Centre's, Poll Body's Reply Over Voting Rights For Prisoners

The Delhi HC sought response of the Centre, Election Commission of India and prisons authorities on a plea seeking to grant and facilitate voting rights to all the people lodged in jails across the country. A bench of Chief Justice Rajendra Menon and Justice VK Rao asked the ministries of Home and Law and Justice to respond to petition filed by three law students.

Florida restores voting rights to more than 1 million former felons

Florida voters took a-massive-step in restoring voting rights to former felons. Amendment 4 automatically reinstates voting rights for people with felony convictions upon completion of their sentences, including prison, parole and probation. Excluded are those convicted of murder or felony sexual offense. The change to state constitution will affect an estimated 1.5 million Floridians, according to Sentencing Project and the Brennan Center for Justice.
