President Trump said planned trade talks with China set for September will go ahead, and the sides continue to negotiate by phone. "The meeting is still on, as I understand it," Trump told reporters. "We're having very good talks with China," he said, but warned that if Beijing retaliates against the US, "we have the ultimate form of retaliation."

After weekend of violent clashes, Beijing to address Hong Kong unrest

China reiterated on Monday its support for Hong Kong's leader, Carrie Lam, and its police, and called on Hong Kong people to oppose violence following another weekend of clashes between protesters and police in the city. Hong Kong bore the scars on Monday of its eighth straight weekend of violent protests, with hard hats, umbrellas and water bottles littering some central streets.

Police fired tear-gas and rubber-bullets while protesters hurled rocks during clashes in a rural Hong-Kong town on Saturday as several thousand activists gathered to protest an attack by suspected triad gang-members at a-train-station last-weekend. Activists pushed ahead with the march in Yuen Long, scene of the attack by club-wielding men, in spite of a refusal by police to allow the protest on safety grounds.
