Paris Police Use Tear Gas On Yellow Vest Protests Anniversary

Demonstrators torched cars and pelted police with stones and bottles and police fired tear gas and water cannon in Paris on Saturday as rallies to mark the first anniversary of the anti-government "yellow vest" demonstrations erupted into violence. A total of 28,000 people demonstrated across France on Saturday including 4,700 in Paris, the interior ministry said.

Scuffles broke out as around 7,000 "yellow vest" demonstrators marched through Paris in 10th consecutive weekend of protests against President Emmanuel Macron's government. The demonstrations were largely peaceful but Reuters Television reporters said they saw clashes break-out late in afternoon between police and demonstrators, some wearing masks, in Paris' Invalides district. Officials said there were around 7,000 demonstrators in Paris and 27,000 across France.

Amid loud calls for him to end the "yellow vest" crisis gripping France, President Emmanuel Macron will address the nation Monday as authorities count the cost of weeks of anti-government protests. Macron, who has been the target of many protesters' anger over his perceived pro-rich policies, was expected to announce "immediate and concrete measures" to respond to the crisis, added Labour Minister Muriel Penicaud.
