Domestic equity indices saw a gap up opening to Tuesday's session, tracking gains in global markets as some factories in China opened despite coronavirus deaths continued to mount. The total number of deaths in China has topped 1,000, well past the toll from Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome, which killed nearly 800 worldwide. Traders took positives from the gains in the US and Asian markets.

India's leading stock exchanges NSE and BSE will remain open for trading on Saturday, February 1, as Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman presents her second Union Budget. In 2015, when former Finance Minister Arun Jaitley presented the Budget on a Saturday, February 28, stock exchanges were kept open for trading, to allow market participants to digest the volatility from the budget announcements.

Benchmark indices Sensex and Nifty closed at record highs of 41,859.69 and 12,329.55 respectively on Monday. Among the Sensex 30 stocks, Infosys was the top gainer, rising over 4%. The gain in Infosys stock came after the IT company announced strong third-quarter earnings and found no evidence of financial misconduct by its executives following an investigation into whistleblower complaints.

Shares of NTPC climbed over a percent on BSE on December-31 after it said 800-mw unit of its Darlipali Super-Thermal Power-Project in Odisha has become operational. With this, the total installed capacity of NTPC and NTPC group has become 49,695-MW and 58,156-MW respectively, NTPC said in a filing to BSE. Shares of NTPC traded 1.16% up at Rs.118.05 on BSE around 12:45-hours IST.

More than three-decades after starting as broker on the Bombay-Stock-Exchange, Asia's oldest bourse, Yogesh Choksey shut-up shop last-year, missing-out on a record-breaking equity rally that would usually boost profits for brokerages. "The business was no-longer viable for a smaller setup like mine," said Choksey, who opened his namesake firm in 1986 in the iconic Jeejeebhoy Towers, home to BSE in the old-business-district of Mumbai.

The S&P BSE Sensex and NSE Nifty 50 indexes fell for the third day in a row on Thursday as futures and options contracts for the month of December expired. For the most part of the day, benchmarks fluctuated between gains and losses but extended declines in afternoon trading on the back of selling pressure in banking, energy and telecom shares.

The Sensex futures and options volume touched a new record on Friday with turnover scaling past Rs 1,495 crore, the BSE said. The exchange attributed the momentum to the increasing traction in equity derivatives following the implementation of interoperability. BSE recently launched liquidity enhancement scheme in equity derivatives and a revised scheme is applicable from November 25.

Domestic stock markets closed at record highs for the second consecutive day ahead of the GST Council meeting scheduled later in the day. The S&P BSE Sensex index ended higher by 224.84 points or 0.5% at 41,577.01 and the broader NSE Nifty benchmark ended at 12,222, up 56.65 points from the previous close.

Tata Motors-owned Jaguar Land Rover(JLR) reported 3.4% decline in total retail sales at 46,542 units in November as compared to the year-ago period. The sales of Jaguar brand were at 11,464 units during the month, down 23.1% from November 2018, Tata Motors said in a BSE filing. Land Rover sales stood at 35,078 units, up 5.5% from the same month last year, it added.

The S&P BSE Sensex and NSE Nifty 50 indexes fell on Thursday after the world's most aggressive central bank Reserve Bank of India surprised analysts and economists by pausing to cut repo rate at its December monetary policy review. The benchmarks extended declines paced by losses in rate-sensitive banking, auto, and financial services shares.
