Sri Lanka's police chief made a nationwide alert 10 days before Sunday's bomb attacks in the country that suicide bombers planned to hit "prominent churches", according to the warning seen by AFP. Police chief Pujuth Jayasundara sent an intelligence warning to top officers on April 11 setting out the threat. Atleast 129 people were killed in six bomb attacks Sunday that included three churches.

Chinese authorities defended a ban on schoolchildren attending informal Tibetan language classes taught by Buddhist monks in western China, as religious and cultural freedoms in the country come under increasing pressure. A county in western Qinghai a province with large Tibetan population that is mostly Buddhist in December ordered an immediate halt to informal language classes taught by monks during the winter school holidays.

India on Thursday deported a Rohingya Muslim family of five to neighboring Myanmar, the second such group expelled in four months during a crackdown on illegal immigrants. India's Hindu nationalist government regards the Rohingya as illegal aliens and a security risk. It has ordered that tens of thousands of the community, who live in small settlements and slums, be identified and repatriated.

Sri Lanka's parliament passed a no-confidence motion against newly appointed Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa on Wednesday, presenting a standoff with the opposition and throwing the country deeper into turmoil. Deputies from Rajapaksa's party rejected the voice vote as illegal, saying it wasn't scheduled and that the pro-China former strongman would remain in office. Government officials said there was confusion about who was in charge.

A new archaeological museum, coming up in PM Modi's hometown Vadnagar in Gujarat, will house coins dating back to 3rd century BC and artifacts excavated from the area over the last 13 years besides other rare items, an official has said. Vadnagar, located about 100 km from Ahmedabad in Mehsana district was fortified with mud ramparts between 3rd century BC and 1st century AD.

A Buddhist monk was detained in Bihar's Bodh Gaya for allegedly sexually abusing 15 boys from Assam studying at a school-cum-meditation centre run by him. The children have complained that they were thrashed, mistreated and sexually abused in the school, police said. The boys will be sent for medical tests, based on which the case will be registered.

The 11 boys of a football team rescued from the cave in Thailand will become Buddhist novices. The boys will live in a Buddhist temple for nine days as part of a promise made by their families in thanks for their safe return and in memory of former Navy SEAL Saman Kunan who died during the rescue operation.

A Dalit organisation in Haryana has alleged that people from the community in Hisar districts Bhatla village are being socially boycotted by members of the upper castes and have threatened to convert to Buddhism. Due to the social boycott in the village, people are being forced to sell their animals and they are being deprived of employment, Raj Kumar, a Dalit, said.
