Left parties to hold protest marches against Union Budget from Feb 12 to 18

The Left parties will hold nationwide protest marches from February 12-18 against the union budget presented by Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, they said in a joint statement on Tuesday. The Left parties CPI(M), CPI, CPI(ML), AIFB and RSP said the nationwide protests will be held against the "anti-people Budget" which "will further squeeze the livelihood conditions of the vast majority of our people".

Veteran Journalist C Raghavachari Journalist Passes Away

Eminent journalist C Raghavachari died following prolonged illness in the early hours of Monday, sources said. He was 80. Raghavachari was editor of 'Visalaandhra' Telugu daily for over 30 years from 1972. Hailing from Warangal district, now in Telangana, Raghavachari began his career as a student union leader in CPI's All India Students Federation and worked as its state (then united AP) president.

WPI inflation rises to 3.18% in March on costlier food & fuel

Wholesale price-based inflation rose for the second consecutive month to 3.18 per cent in March on costlier food and fuel, government data released Monday showed. The Wholesale Price Index (WPI) based inflation was at 2.93 per cent in February. It was 2.74 per cent in March 2018. Inflation in food articles hardened with steep rise in prices of vegetables during March 2019.

CPI announces assured pension of Rs 9k per month

The CPI Friday announced that it would give a minimum pension of Rs 9,000 per month, grant full statehood to Delhi and Puducherry and a one-time comprehensive loan waiver for farmers as part of its manifesto for the Lok Sabha polls. The Communist Party of India (CPI) also proposed a law for agricultural workers and a separate budget for agriculture.

The CPIM demanded sacking of Meghalaya Governor Tathagata Roy over his support for calls of boycotting Kashmir in wake of Pulwama-attack. "An appeal from a retired colonel of Indian-Army: Don't visit Kashmir; don't go to Amarnath for next 2-years. Don't buy articles from Kashmir emporia or Kashmiri tradesman who come every-winter. Boycott everything Kashmiri. I am inclined to agree," Roy had posted on Twitter.

Retail inflation dips further to 2.05% in January, lowest in 19 months

The consumer price inflation (CPI) for the month of January further declined to 2.05 per cent on the back of drop in food prices and smaller increases in fuel costs. Industrial production jumped to 2.4% in December, 2018 from 0.5 per cent in November, 2018 driven mainly by a sharp spike in manufacturing index which rose to 2.7% vs -0.4% month-on-month.

Mobile apps to capture inflation data, regional CPI in the offing

The government is considering using mobile applications to capture price data to estimate the monthly retail inflation numbers and also plans to release regional level inflation going ahead in a move to emphasise on the key indicator's relevance. The MoSPI plans to rope in private companies to collect data, a move that will reduce costs and time taken for collating relevant information for CPI.
