The Indian rupee on September-17 weakened by another 18 paise to settle at 71.78 against the US dollar as investors fretted over higher crude oil-prices. Elevated crude oil-prices have emerged as major fears for India the world's third largest oil importer in form of fiscal slippage and inflationary pressure. The local-unit finally settled for the day at 71.78, down 18-paise over its previous closing.

Crude oil-prices continued to trade on a muted note as the concerns of weakening global economy remained an overhang. Prices got some support after more-than-expected drop of US crude stockpile and concerns over potential disruptions to oil and gas production caused by a-tropical-storm in the Gulf of Mexico. Tropical Storm Barry boosted crude futures as oil companies in the Gulf of Mexico sliced production.

OPEC will extend production cuts into 2020 as the world's leading oil exporters fret about a weakening outlook for global demand growth and the relentless rise in output from America's shale fields. Ministers from the group meeting in Vienna agreed to prolong their supply curbs by another nine months, said delegates, asking not to be named because the talks were ongoing.

India's oil minister Dharmendra Pradhan expressed concerns about rising crude oil prices to his Saudi Arabian counterpart, Khalid al-Falih, amid worsening U.S.-Iranian tensions, a government statement said. Global oil prices rose sharply on fears of a U.S. military attack on Iran that would disrupt flows from the Middle East, which provides more than a fifth of the world's oil output.

Crude oil-prices traded flat with some volatility within a-broad-range after a surprise drawdown in US crude stockpiles, but an escalating US-Chinese trade fights limited oil's gains as investors were worried about the global outlook for energy demand. WTI and Brent were set for weekly-loss after US escalated its tariff war with China by increasing levies to 25% for $200 billion worth of Chinese goods.

FPIs will return to India and other emerging markets in 2019 after staying away the previous year, a top executive at Aditya Birla Sun Life mutual fund said. "India and other EMs now offer favourable risk-reward amid improving growth, supportive macros, healthy balance sheets, light investor positioning and reasonable valuations," said Mahesh Patil, co-chief investment officer, Aditya Birla Sun Life AMC.

The government is taking steps for implementing methanol economy in India and has constituted five task forces including its production from high ash coal, Parliament was informed Thursday. Minister of State for Road Transport and Highways Mansukh L Mandaviya informed the Lok Sabha in a written reply. He said task force on production of methanol using high ash coal is one of them.

Oil prices climbed after tumbling 5 percent in the last session, with OPEC production cuts that start next month seen being deeper then previously expected. Benchmark Brent crude futures were up 1.51 percent at $55.17 per barrel at 0112 GMT, recovering from losses of $2.89 per barrel the session before. US WTI crude futures rose 1.53 percent, or 70 cents, to $46.58 per barrel.

Oil sank to another one-year low in New York as a sell-off in equities worsened crude market sentiments already soured by signs of plentiful American supplies. Futures in New York slipped as much as 4.1% after closing below $50 on Monday for the first time since October 2017. The US government expects shale-oil production to surge, potentially swelling already-abundant inventories.
