Petrol and diesel pumps across Rajasthan will keep their operations shut for 24 hours, starting October 23 to protest against the increased rate of Value Added Taxes (VAT), officials said on Tuesday. Sunit Bagai, president of the Rajasthan Petrol Diesel Association (RPDA) said fuel pumps located in the border areas are on the verge of shutdown due to increased VAT rate.

The petrol and diesel prices are expected to cool down over the coming weeks as global petroleum product prices are also easing according to IndianOil. The price of petrol fell by 10 paisa to Rs.74.51 per litre and diesel by 6 paisa to Rs.67.43 a litre on Thursday. This is first cut in auto fuel prices since September 14.

Fuel prices continue to soar on Tuesday. In Delhi, petrol rates surged to Rs.74.61 a litre, the highest since November 25 last year. Diesel was selling at Rs.67.47 a litre in the national capital. The surge in fuel prices continues in the country even as international crude oil prices stabilised on Monday, with brent crude down by $60 per barrel nearly after a month.

Petrol price hit Rs.80 per litre in Mumbai, the highest in 2019, after petrol rates increased by 15 paise per litre while diesel rates increased by 10 paise across the country. Petrol prices in Delhi, Kolkata and Chennai were Rs.74.43, Rs.77.03 and Rs.77.28, respectively. Fuel prices began surging after drone attacks on Saudi oil facilities earlier this month.

In view of extensive damage caused by heavy rains in Madhya Pradesh, the state government decided to impose 5% VAT on liquor, petrol and diesel to generate additional revenue, said an official. The state suffered an estimated loss of Rs.12,000 crore due to excessive rains this monsoon, a senior official said. The five percent Value Added Tax will be a temporary measure, he added.

Petrol prices were increased by state-run oil marketing companies. The price of petrol was at Rs.72.17/litre in Delhi, Rs.74.89/litre in Kolkata, Rs.77.85/litre in Mumbai and Rs.74.99/litre in Chennai, according to IOC website, iocl.com. The rate of diesel was at Rs.65.58 per litre in Delhi, Rs.67.99 per litre in Kolkata, Rs.68.78 per litre in Mumbai and Rs.69.31 per litre in Chennai.

Petrol and diesel prices saw the biggest hike since July 5 Budget as India voiced concern over spike in global oil prices following attacks on Saudi Arabian crude oil facilities. Petrol price was increased by 14 paisa per litre to Rs.72.17 and diesel by 15 paisa to Rs.65.58 per litre in the national capital, according to price information available from state-owned oil firms.

Petrol and diesel prices in India may jump significantly due to last week's drone attack on Saudi Arabia's Aramco oil refinery, which is the largest oil processing facility in the world, as per reports. The price of milk has reached Rs 140 per litre in Karachi and the Sindh Province. Interestingly, petrol and diesel prices in Pakistan are lower than that of milk.

Union minister Nitin Gadkari on Friday said the government is not planning to stop petrol and diesel vehicles. He said the government is promoting e-vehicles and people will slowly accept it. Gadkari's statement came after the NITI Ayog had announced banning two-wheelers under 150cc by 2025 and three-wheelers vehicles by 2023.
