Danish politicians poured scorn on the notion of selling Greenland to the United States following reports that President Donald Trump had privately discussed the idea of buying the world's biggest island with his advisers. Trump is due to visit Copenhagen in September and the Arctic will be on the agenda during meetings with the prime ministers of Denmark and Greenland, an autonomous Danish territory.

North Korea launched at least two short-range ballistic missiles on Friday, South Korea's military said, shortly after Pyongyang described South Korea's president as "impudent" and vowed that inter-Korean talks are over. The North has protested against joint U.S.-South Korea military drills, largely computer-simulated, which kicked off last week, calling them a rehearsal for war. It has also fired several short-range missiles in recent weeks.

Asserting that the US is "having a very good discussion" on a trade deal with China, Trump told reporters at the Morristown airport that he will speak with Chinese President Xi Jinping "very soon".

The Democratic-led US House of Representatives Judiciary Committee said it has subpoenaed President Trump's former campaign manager, Corey Lewandowski, to testify in public as part of its investigation of the Trump presidency. The committee, which is actively considering articles of impeachment against Trump, also served a subpoena on former Trump White-House aide Rick Dearborn, former deputy-chief of staff, the committee said in a statement.
