The government has approved 8.65% interest rate on employees provident fund for 2018-19, which will now be credited into the accounts of over 6 crore subscribers of retirement fund body EPFO, a source said. The EPFO has been settling EPF withdrawal claims at 8.55% interest rate, approved for 2017-18. Now, the EPFO will settle accounts on higher rate of 8.65% for 2018-19.

Labour Minister Santosh Gangwar on Tuesday said over 6 crore EPFO members will get 8.65% interest on their deposits for 2018-19. The Central Board of Trustees the apex decision-making body of the Employees' Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) had approved 8.65% interest rate for the last fiscal in February this year. The proposal was sent for the concurrence of the finance ministry.

EPFO will launch an e-inspection system that will simplify inspection process and ensure organisations with open communications will not be subject to physical inspection until absolutely necessary, according to Central Provident Fund Commissioner Sunil. EPFO proposed to amend the Act to limit enquiry period to a maximum of two-years in order to curtail harassment, he also said at a Confederation of Indian Industry-organised interactive.

After a finance ministry proposal to cut down the EPFO interest rate for the last financial year 2018-19 was shot down by the labour ministry, EPF rates may remain unchanged for about 6-crore subscribers. In February, the retirement fund body, managed by the labour ministry, had announced a 10 basis points increase in the interest rate on provident fund deposits to 8.65% for 2018-19.

The labour ministry and Employees Provident Fund Organisation(EPFO) are sticking to the 8.65% return proposed by the retirement savings body's board of trustees, citing adequate reserves and the Narendra Modi government's pre-poll political backing to the plan. The finance ministry has objected to the proposal for increasing the payout for 2018-19 to 8.65% from 8.55% in the previous year, and sought a review.

Net employment generation in the formal sector was higher at 8.14 lakh in March 2019 against 7.88 lakh in February this year, according to the latest EPFO payroll data. Around 67.59 lakh jobs were generated in the entire 2018-19 fiscal, the payroll data based on members joining the schemes of the Employees' Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) showed.

The EPFO is offering an online-service to withdraw your PF account balance. To make the withdrawal process quicker and easier, the provident fund body has introduced a one-page composite form for those EPF subscribers who have linked their UAN with Aadhaar. The single-page composite claim form replaces multiple other claim forms like Form 19, Form 10C, Form 31, etc that were in use earlier.
