Monsoon onset in Delhi/NCR region likely in the next 72 hours: IMD

The mercury in the national capital dipped marginally on July 2 owning to moisture-laden easterly winds that have created favourable conditions for the onset of monsoon in the next 72 hours, officials said. Senior scientist at the Indian Meteorological Department, Kuldeep Srivastava said very light rain is likely on July 3 and thereafter, precipitation activity is likely to increase.

Earthquake Hits Uttarakhand, Nicobar Islands: IMD

An earthquake measuring 3.9 on the Richter scale hit Chamoli district of Uttarakhand in the wee hours of Saturday, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD). Earlier, a light intensity earthquake of magnitude 4.9 struck Nicobar Islands at 12:35am. No loss of property or life has been reported so far. Further details are awaited.

Tamil Nadu braces itself after IMD issues cyclone alert

The IMD issued an alert for a cyclone that is likely to hit Tamil Nadu in the next 48 hours following the formation of a low-pressure region in the Bay of Bengal. Hours after the IMD's alert, Cuddalore district (Tamil Nadu) collector Anbuselvan said that all precautionary arrangements were in place to face any eventualities.

Earthquake of magnitude 4.8hits Nicobar Islands

According to the Indian Meteorological department, an earthquake of magnitude 4.8 on the Richter scale hit Nicobar Islands at 5.30 am today. More details awaited. Earlier in January, a strong earthquake of magnitude 6 hit the seismologically prone Andaman and Nicobar Islands, National Centre for Seismology (NCS) had said. The earthquake hit the region at 8.43 am and its epicentre was Nicobar Islands region.

Cyclone Gaja to intensify again, likely to hit Lakshadweep

After Cyclone Gaja made landfall in TN and killed at least 36 people, the IMD on Sunday said it will re-intensify into a cyclonic storm and is likely to hit the Arabian Sea and Lakshadweep area in the next 12 hours. The weather department also said that "extremely heavy" rainfall is likely to occur at isolated places over Lakshadweep in the next 24 hours.

The Met department has predicted heavy to very heavy rainfall for pockets in south Gujarat and Saurashtra region during the next five days. According to officials, the entire state of Gujarat will get rainfall this week. "At present there are two different systems operating which will result in good rainfall in the state," said Jayanta Sarkar, director, India Meteorological Department (IMD).

Heavy to very rainfall in large parts of India this week: IMD

Heavy to very heavy rainfall is expected in large parts of India, including several places in Jammu and Kashmir, Tamil Nadu, Assam and Gujarat, over the next few days till Friday, the India Meteorological Department said today. The warning comes after the IMD said last week that the monsoon had covered the entire country, 17 days ahead of its normal onset date.

Two Dead After Rains Lash Mumbai, Wall Collapses in Antop Hill

At least two people have been killed as heavy rains lash Mumbai on 24 and 25 June. A wall collapsed in the Antop Hill locality in Wadala East, leading to more than a dozen cars being stuck and residents being trapped. The Indian Meteorological Department has warned that "heavy to very heavy rain" will continue in the city on Monday, 25 June.
