Gujarat, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh have extended highest subsidies under different programmes, including those for safety purposes and for kerosene, to their fishermen in 2018-19, India has informed the World Trade Organization (WTO). "The information provided in this notification is for transparency purposes in order to clarify the operation of programmes or measures," the country's communique added.

Union Petroleum and Natural Gas Minister Dharmendra Pradhan has promised to supply 1,000 kilo-litre of subsided kerosene to Odisha, as per request made by state chief minister Naveen Patnaik in the aftermath of Cyclone Fani. Mr Pradhan said that an oil PSU under the Petroleum and Natural Gas ministry will contribute Rs. 3.2 crore to the Chief Minister Relief Fund.

Government may widen its subsidy net to cover all cooking fuels including piped natural-gas and bio-gas along with existing subsidy on LPG and kerosene. Niti Aayog's proposal for comprehensive 'cooking-subsidy' is being deliberated at top-level and could form part of government's election manifesto with general-elections juts months away. The move would benefit all-consumers besides making it attractive for consumers to switch to alternate cooking-fuels.

A 20-year-old newly-wed woman was set on fire in a village in Sitapur on Saturday afternoon for allegedly resisting a molestation bid by two brothers and submitting a police complaint against them. She suffered 45% burns in the incident and was in a critical state, said police. The policemen, reportedly, did not pay heed to the woman's earlier compliant of sexual harassment.

An 18-month old girl died Monday after she drank kerosene kept in a bottle in her house at Pollachi in the district, police said. Ananya was playing in the house when she suddenly took the bottle and consumed kerosene Sunday evening and started crying in pain. Her parents rushed her to a government hospital, but the child died without responding to treatment, police said.

A 16-year-old girl died today after she was allegedly set on fire by her jilted lover at Chaukhandi village under Safdarganj police station limits in Barabanki district of Uttar Pradesh, the police said. The girl was allegedly in touch with another local youth and this might have led him to committing the crime, the police said, adding that a case was registered.
