Google Pay India learnings will be taken to global markets: Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai

Google will take lessons from the success of its Google Pay platform in India to other global markets, said Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai in a post-earnings analyst call on Monday. According to an earlier comment by a company official last year, Google Pay's monthly active user-base had grown three-fold to reach 67 million in September 2019 from 22 million in September 2018.

Government Allows FASTag Recharge Through BHIM App

National Payments Corporation of India(NPCI) on Thursday said that customers can recharge NETC FASTags through BHIM UPI. Any BHIM UPI-enabled mobile app would now give vehicle owners the opportunity to recharge their FASTags on the go and avoid queues at toll plazas, NCPI said. The National Electronic Toll Collection(NETC) is a programme designed to meet the electronic tolling needs of the Indian market.

UPI transaction at all-time high; crosses 1B mark in October

National Payments Corporation of India(NPCI) said the number of transactions of UPI has crossed the landmark figure of 1 billion in October. "The total transactions of UPI jumped to 1.15 billion in October 2019 from 0.96 billion in September 2019," NPCI said in a release. Total transaction value of UPI stood at Rs.1.91L-crore during the month, up from Rs.1.61L-crore in the previous month.

E-commerce marketplace Snapdeal has partnered with NPCI's RuPay to offer discounts to its debit and credit-card users in the upcoming festive-season, in a bid to cash on the growing popularity of the homegrown-payment-gateway. This partnership-offers RuPay's nearly 600-million users an instant 20% discount when they use their debit or credit-cards to buy on Snapdeal in the coming festive-season, e-commerce platform said in a statement.

RBI allows payment of all recurring bills through BBPS

In a consumer friendly initiative, the RBI on Monday expanded the scope of Bharat Bill Payment System (BBPS) to cover all repetitive bill payments, which may include school fees, insurance premiums and municipal taxes. Currently, the facility of payment of recurring bills through BBPS is available only in five segments direct to home (DTH), electricity, gas, telecom and water.

Number of debit cards fell 11% year-on-year in June

The number of debit cards in circulation dropped over 11% between June 2018 and June 2019 to 837 million, as per data released by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) and shared by payment service provider Worldline in a recent report. The drop in cards outstanding was a result of mass closure of zero-balance accounts, Worldline said.

UPI transactions worth over Rs.1 trillion conducted in December

In a record of sorts, 620.17 million UPI transactions worth Rs.102,594.82 crore were conducted in December, as compared to 524.94 million transactions valued at Rs.82,232.21 crore in November an 18% increase in transaction volume, data from the NPCI nshowed Tuesday. December was first-month when over 600 million UPI transactions were recorded. UPI transactions had crossed 500 million-mark for the first-time in November.

WhatsApp seeks RBI nod to expand payment services to all users

WhatsApp Chief has written to the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), seeking a formal nod to expand payments services to all its 200 million users in India. WhatsApp is currently piloting WhatsApp payments, and its Chief Chris Daniels has now written to the RBI urging that a formal approval be granted to take the payments product to all its users in the country.
