E-commerce marketplace Snapdeal has partnered with NPCI's RuPay to offer discounts to its debit and credit-card users in the upcoming festive-season, in a bid to cash on the growing popularity of the homegrown-payment-gateway. This partnership-offers RuPay's nearly 600-million users an instant 20% discount when they use their debit or credit-cards to buy on Snapdeal in the coming festive-season, e-commerce platform said in a statement.

The National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) is exploring the option of imposing a cap on the market share or transaction value of individual payment entities on the Unified Payments Interface (UPI) platform. The move could address concerns that concentration of transactions through non-banking players such as Google Pay and PhonePe could pose a systemic risk to the digital payments ecosystem in the country.

The number of debit cards in circulation dropped over 11% between June 2018 and June 2019 to 837 million, as per data released by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) and shared by payment service provider Worldline in a recent report. The drop in cards outstanding was a result of mass closure of zero-balance accounts, Worldline said.

Indian authorities are concerned that WhatsApp's payment service might share user data with group companies Facebook and Instagram, compromising the security, privacy and non-commercial information of its subscribers. The government has asked the National Payments Corporation of India(NPCI) to look into the matter and ensure that user data collected through payment services such as WhatsApp and Google Pay is not shared, top officials said.

The National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI), which runs the Unified Payments Interface (UPI) network, has slashed usage fees for small transactions to expand the system's adoption among banks and payment service providers (PSPs). For UPI transactions up to Rs.1,000, the charge has been cut to 10 paise from 25 paise, NPCI said in a note to banks and PSPs.

In a record of sorts, 620.17 million UPI transactions worth Rs.102,594.82 crore were conducted in December, as compared to 524.94 million transactions valued at Rs.82,232.21 crore in November an 18% increase in transaction volume, data from the NPCI nshowed Tuesday. December was first-month when over 600 million UPI transactions were recorded. UPI transactions had crossed 500 million-mark for the first-time in November.

WhatsApp Chief has written to the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), seeking a formal nod to expand payments services to all its 200 million users in India. WhatsApp is currently piloting WhatsApp payments, and its Chief Chris Daniels has now written to the RBI urging that a formal approval be granted to take the payments product to all its users in the country.

Paytm has alleged that Google Pay is utilising users' personal data for advertising purposes, without any additional consent. In a letter to the National Payments Corporation of India, Paytm also alleged that Google shares payments data with group companies and third parties. However, a Google spokesperson said the company does not use any individual UPI transaction data for monetisation purposes.
