The Congress government in Chhattisgarh has decided to put implementation of Nyuntam Aay (Nyay), a major poll plank of the party in the run-up to the Lok Sabha elections, in abeyance. Speaking to media, Chhattisgarh chief minister Bhupesh Baghel confirmed that the state government had decided against implementing the scheme, despite a directive from the party high command to Congress-ruled states.

Congress on Tuesday clarified that its minimum income guarantee initiative, NYAY (Nyuntam Aay Yojana), is not a "top-up scheme" but assures Rs 72,000 to 20 percent of India's poorest families. Addressing a press conference, Congress spokesperson Randeep Surjewala accused the BJP of being "anti-poor". "When poor will have more money the country's economy will grow at rapid pace," he stated.
