Petrol prices soared by Rs.1.59 a litre and diesel by Rs.1.31 in the last six days, the most since daily price revision began in 2017. Petrol price in Delhi was hiked by 27 paise to Rs.73.62 a litre and diesel by 18 paise to Rs.66.74 per litre on Sunday. This comes after drones attacked Saudi oil facilities earlier this month.

Petrol prices were increased by state-run oil marketing companies. The price of petrol was at Rs.72.17/litre in Delhi, Rs.74.89/litre in Kolkata, Rs.77.85/litre in Mumbai and Rs.74.99/litre in Chennai, according to IOC website, iocl.com. The rate of diesel was at Rs.65.58 per litre in Delhi, Rs.67.99 per litre in Kolkata, Rs.68.78 per litre in Mumbai and Rs.69.31 per litre in Chennai.

Petrol and diesel prices saw the biggest hike since July 5 Budget as India voiced concern over spike in global oil prices following attacks on Saudi Arabian crude oil facilities. Petrol price was increased by 14 paisa per litre to Rs.72.17 and diesel by 15 paisa to Rs.65.58 per litre in the national capital, according to price information available from state-owned oil firms.

Petrol and diesel prices in India may jump significantly due to last week's drone attack on Saudi Arabia's Aramco oil refinery, which is the largest oil processing facility in the world, as per reports. Quoting Kotak Institutional Equities', two business news websites have claimed that petrol and diese prices may jump by as many as Rs 5-6 per liter in India.

Petrol and diesel will cost more in UP from Tuesday after the state government hiked VAT. A litre of petrol will now cost 98-paisa more across the state while a litre of diesel has become dearer by Rs.2.35. The rise in prices of the fuel comes after the state government decided to increase VAT on petrol to 26.80% while that on diesel to 17.48%.

Petrol and diesel have turned costlier by up to Rs. 5 per litre in Rajasthan following a hike in excise duty and road cess announced by the Centre and increase in local levies by the state government. The Centre on Friday announced a Re 1 per litre increase each in excise duty and road cess levied on the fuels.

Petrol and diesel rates were revised across the country on Saturday, a day after Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, in her 2019-20 Budget, proposed to increase excise duty and road cess of Rs. 1 per litre each on the fuel. Petrol rates have been increased by Rs. 2.45 per litre while Diesel will now cost Rs. 2.36 more for a litre.

Petrol and diesel will get dearer by Rs 2 a litre following a duty hike proposed in the budget. "Crude prices have softened from their highs. This gives me a room to review excise duty and cess on petrol and diesel," Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman said in her budget speech on Friday.

Petrol and diesel prices started rising soon after the last phase of the general election concluded, and have increased by 70-80 paisa/litre in the past nine days. Prices have been on the rise since May 20, a day after the final phase of polling for the LS elections ended. Petrol price on Tuesday was raised by 11 paise and diesel by 5 paise.

Oil-marketing companies slashed petrol prices while diesel rates were unchanged across the metros on Saturday. Petrol is priced at Rs.71.03 per litre in New Delhi, Rs.73.11 per litre in Kolkata, Rs.76.64 per litre in Mumbai and Rs.73.72 per litre in Chennai, according to state-run Indian Oil Corporation's (IOC) website, iocl.com. Petrol prices were cut by 7 paise per litre in Delhi, Mumbai and Chennai.
