The death toll from the novel coronavirus outbreak soared past 800 in China on Sunday, according to official figures, overtaking the global toll for SARS. With 81 more people dying in Hubei the province at the centre of the outbreak the toll is now higher than the 774 killed worldwide by the Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome in 2002-2003, according to figures released Sunday.

The number of confirmed cases in the new-virus outbreak in China reached 5,974 on Wednesday, overtaking the number of people infected in the mainland by the SARS epidemic in 2002-2003. China's national health commission reported more than 1,400 confirmed new-cases on Wednesday, as the death toll rose to 132. There were 5,327 confirmed cases in mainland China during the Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome epidemic.

China warned Wednesday that a SARS-like virus that has killed nine people, infected hundreds and spread to other countries could mutate, as authorities scrambled to contain the disease during the Lunar New Year travel season. The new coronavirus has caused alarm for its similarity to SARS (Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome), which killed nearly 650 people across mainland China and Hong Kong in 2002-2003.

South Korea's Unification Ministry, which handles relations with North-Korea, said it could not confirm the report. Most foreign tourists to North-Korea are Chinese or are people who travel to the North from China, its major diplomatic ally and biggest aid benefactor. Young Pioneer Tours is based in China.
