In a SIM card swap fraud case, a city-based textile merchant lost at least Rs.1.86 crore, which was illegally transferred from his account by unidentified persons to various bank accounts across the country, police said Wednesday. The incident came to light when the victim, who hails from Mahim in Central Mumbai, approached the BKC Cyber Police Station with a complaint Friday, an official said.

Facial verification will be must for people looking to get a SIM card with their Aadhaar cards from September 15, according to UIDAI. Telecom operators would need to capture the photo and verify it with eKYC before the SIM activation. The feature would be an additional security feature along with the available fingerprint and iris verification, UIDAI added.

Under SIM Swap Fraud fraudsters collect your personal information and contact your mobile operator, showing your identity proof saying the original SIM is lost. He then applies for a duplicate SIM card. The mobile operator would de-activate your SIM card. The fraudster generates an OTP on his own phone, using the duplicate SIM and then makes online banking transactions.

Consumers can either give their Virtual IDs or Aadhaar card number to get new SIMs or verify existing ones, as per a notice by the telecom department. The Virtual ID system provides users with a 16-digit randomly generated number which can be used instead of the Aadhaar number. The service will be enabled on the UIDAI website from July 1.
