PM Modi was conferred the "Global Goalkeeper" award by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation for the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan launched by his government. Accepting the award, Modi said he shared the honour with crores of Indians who had contributed to the success of the cleanliness mission. The Swachh Bharat Abhiyan was launched by the Modi government during its first term on October-2, 2014.

Gandhi Peace Prize winner Yohei Sasakawa has urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to make the leprosy eradication programme as "massive" as Swachh Bharat Abhiyan and include it in school curriculum to remove the stigma attached to it. According to World Health Organisation (WHO), India has the highest number of new cases of leprosy in the world annually, followed by Brazil and Indonesia.

Under the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan, over nine crore toilets have been constructed, President Ram Nath Kovind said on Thursday, underlining that coverage of rural sanitation that was less than 40% in 2014 has increased to 98%. Addressing the joint session of Parliament, he said lack of toilets forced crores of Indians, especially "our daughters and daughters-in-law", to lead an undignified and an unhealthy life.

The Goa state government will miss its target to eradicate open defecation by the year end even as Union sanitation and drinking water ministry's data shows that just 5.87% of Goa's villages have been declared ODF, which is the lowest coverage in the entire country. The state government had planned to install 60,000-bio-toilets in the state but GWMC is yet to award the contract.
