Freight rates for the nine-metric tonne pay load section declined by Rs 1,000 at the local truck transport market in the national capital following excess position of trucks against restricted cargo movements. Transporters said heavy availability of trucks in the market along with reduced cargo movements mainly pulled down some freight rates.

Truck operators on Friday decided to call off their week-long strike after government ensured them that their demands will be considered. “Their role in keeping economy on track is integral. We will try our best to solve their problems at the earliest. I would like to thank the community for calling off the strike,” Y S Malik, Road Transport Secretary told.

The nationwide indefinite strike called by truck-operations received a mix response the third day on Sunday. However, the strike has led to losses of over Rs 2,000 crore in Maharashtra, while the nationwide losses have been pegged at Rs 10,000 crore. The Centre is likely to intervene today and has called transporters for talks in an attempt to end the crisis, the report said.

The All India Motor Transport Congress (AIMTC) has called for a nationwide 'chakka jam' on Friday to kick off an indefinite strike to protest rising diesel prices, among other things. Private-buses, school-buses, interstate-buses and tempos will also stay off roads as the State Bus and Company Owner's Association (SBCOA) puts its weight behind the agitation, which will see participation from around 93 lakh truckers.

A section of truckers under goods vehicles umbrella body ACOGOA today went on an indefinite nationwide strike, protesting hike in diesel prices, among other issues. The strike had impact in West Bengal and Karnataka. AIMTC, however, alleged that today's 'chakkajam' was orchestrated by a small section and had no impact and called for a nationwide strike from July 20 on the similar issues.
