The WHO that the original epicentre in China of the coronavirus outbreak at last-reporting no-new-cases gave hope to the rest of the world-battling the pandemic. The city of Wuhan registered no-new-cases of COVID-19 in 24-hours for the first-time since reporting its first-case in December in an outbreak that has gone on to infect more than 250,000-people around the world and kill more than 11,000-people.

The death toll in China from the new coronavirus reached 213 on Friday, with overall cases worldwide rising rapidly in an outbreak that the WHO declared a global health emergency. The death toll in Hubei, the Chinese province at the centre of the epidemic, had risen to 204 and there were 9,692 cases of infection nationally as of Thursday, Chinese health authorities said.

The World Health Organization congratulated India for its ban on electronic cigarettes, the latest evidence of a global backlash against a technology touted as safer than regular smoking. In a tweet, the UN body's South-East Asia office said that India was the sixth country in the region to ban e-cigarettes after North-Korea, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Thailand and East Timor. Singapore has also outlawed e-cigarettes.

The World Health Organization appointed Dr Poonam Khetrapal Singh as its South-East Asia regional director for a second five-year term. The WHO Executive Board on Saturday unanimously endorsed Ms Khetrapal Singh, who was earlier unanimously nominated by 11 member-countries of the region for another five years. Poonam Khetrapal Singh is the first woman to become regional director of WHO South-East Asia Region.
